Greenport Maritime Festival — North Fork Harbor Weekend
Greenport's annual Maritime Festival turns the working harbor village into a regional weekend destination — tall ships in the harbor, oyster shucking competitions, traditional whaleboat races, food + craft vendors along Front Street, live music throughout. Free admission. The locals' East End fall favorite.
Greenport’s annual Maritime Festival is the East End’s signature fall weekend — a working harbor village turned into a regional destination Saturday and Sunday in mid-September. Tall ships in the harbor, oyster shucking competitions, traditional whaleboat races on the Sound, food + craft vendors along Front Street, live music throughout.
The marquee features:
- Tall ship visits — the Sloop Clearwater, Niagara, or similar
- Whaleboat races — traditional 6-person rowing competition, harbor
- Oyster shucking competition — Saturday afternoon, free spectator
- Maritime craft demos — net-making, rope work, sailmaking
- 100+ food + craft vendors along Front Street
- Live music — three stages, all weekend
Why this is the move:
- One of the few LI events realistically reachable by LIRR (Greenport line from Penn, 2h45)
- Greenport itself is a walkable, restaurant-rich village — pair the festival with a real dinner
- Less crowded than Oyster Bay’s Oyster Festival (October) but similar caliber
- Free Shelter Island ferry access from the harbor for festival-goers
Practical:
- Park free at the LIRR station + walk to Front Street (8 min)
- Driving from Western LI: 2 hours each way — plan accordingly
- Front Street fills 11 AM both days — early arrival or late afternoon
- Combine with North Fork wineries (Bedell, Pellegrini, Pindar) on the drive back
- Stay overnight at one of Greenport’s harbor inns for the full weekend
