Sunken Meadow State Park’s monthly family fishing clinic — Saturday mornings May through September. Park rangers teach basic rod-and-reel + bait + safe-release fishing at the Sound-side beach. Free rod rentals, free admission to the clinic itself (just the regular $10 state-park parking).
Why this is the family Saturday move:
- Free clinic — rangers run it, rods + bait are provided
- Sound water is calm and shallow — safe for kids 6+
- 2-hour program — the right length for sustained kid attention
- Park infrastructure — bathrooms, snack bar, picnic areas all immediately available
- Easy egress — once kids have had enough, you’re 30 min from anywhere
Practical:
- $10 state-park parking
- Free clinic, rod + bait included
- Best for kids age 6-12 (younger kids may not have the attention span)
- Bring sunblock, water, hats — no shade at the fishing spots
- Catch-and-release format teaches conservation alongside the fishing
- Pair with: Sunken Meadow boardwalk walk + concession-stand lunch after
The state-park naturalist program also runs separate kayak-on-the-Sound clinics, monarch-butterfly tagging walks, and shore-bird identification programs. Check the park’s events calendar for the full season.
