Long Island Aquarium
The Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead is the East End's best rainy-day move with kids. Sea lion shows, shark tank walk-overs, sea turtle rehab tours, and a working biology team that runs behind-the-scenes programs for visitors.
The Long Island Aquarium is the East End’s biggest indoor family destination. Sea lion shows multiple times daily, a shark tank with above-and-below viewing, sea turtle rehab, river otters, and the small but well-curated rest of the rotating exhibits.
What we’d do
- Behind-the-Scenes Tour (11 AM, $65 with same-day admission) — 90 min, biologist-led, 12 guests max
- Lunch — Tweed’s or North Fork Roasting (both 5 min away in downtown Riverhead)
- General admission — sea lion show at 2:30, shark tank + rehab area, gift shop
Practical
- Best time: weekday mornings or Sunday mid-day (Saturday is the busiest)
- Age sweet spot: 4-12 most enthralled; teens fine; toddlers tire by hour 2
- Free parking, plenty
- Combine with: a stop at Briermere Farms pie on the way home (10 min east on Route 25)
