Garden City village center with mature trees and tudor architecture
Nassau County

Garden City

Garden City is Nassau's planned-community jewel — designed in the 1870s as one of America's first planned suburbs, still gorgeous, walkable, and home to Roosevelt Field + the Long Island Children's Museum. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is the architectural landmark.

Known for

  • Roosevelt Field Mall
  • Long Island Children's Museum
  • Cradle of Aviation Museum
  • Cathedral of the Incarnation
  • Adelphi University

Garden City is one of America’s first planned suburbs (Alexander Turney Stewart, 1870s) and has retained the bones — tree-lined streets, gorgeous Tudor + Victorian housing stock, a real downtown with shopping. The museums on the south end (LICM + Cradle of Aviation) are the family draw.

Worth knowing:

  • Roosevelt Field — one of the largest malls in the country, anchor retail
  • Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) — best Nassau family destination, especially for under-8s
  • Cradle of Aviation Museum — aerospace history, planetarium, summer kids’ programs
  • The Cathedral of the Incarnation — landmark Episcopal cathedral, occasionally hosts free concerts
  • Adelphi University — campus events open to public, Performing Arts Center
