Downtown Hempstead Main Street at golden hour
Nassau County

Hempstead

Hempstead is Nassau County's most populous incorporated village and the county seat — diverse, dense, transit-connected. Home to Hofstra University, the Hempstead Lake park system, and a working-class commercial downtown along Fulton + Main.

Known for

  • Hofstra University
  • Nassau County seat
  • Hempstead Lake State Park
  • diverse food scene
  • transit hub (LIRR + buses)

Hempstead is one of Long Island’s most underrated downtowns — diverse, dense, and the actual county seat of Nassau. Hofstra University anchors the east side of town, the Hempstead Transit Center is the busiest bus hub on Long Island, and the food scene reflects the village’s diversity: Salvadoran, Haitian, Trinidadian, Korean, Mexican — all within a 6-block walk.

The locals’ moves:

  • Salvadoran pupuserías along Fulton Avenue — try El Salvador Bakery for the OG version
  • Caribbean roti in the strip-mall back-streets — the spot rotates but always exists
  • Hofstra University events — Adams Playhouse, Hofstra Museum of Art, summer concerts
  • Hempstead Lake State Park — biggest Nassau park you’ve probably never visited

Practical:

  • LIRR Babylon + Hempstead branches converge here — easiest LIRR access in Nassau outside Garden City
  • Avoid driving downtown 4-7 PM weekdays (Nassau county-seat traffic is real)
  • Hofstra graduation weekends in May are the biggest single-day traffic events of the year
