Greenport
Greenport is the East End's actual village — North Fork's only walkable downtown, working harbor, ferry to Shelter Island, restored 19th-century main street. Less precious than the Hamptons, more soulful than Riverhead. The summer-Friday-evening downtown is one of the prettiest scenes on Long Island.
Known for
- North Fork's walkable downtown
- working harbor + Shelter Island ferry
- Greenport Brewing Company
- Mitchell Park carousel + waterfront
- Front Street restaurants
Greenport is the East End village locals try not to advertise. North Fork’s only walkable downtown — restored 19th-century Front Street + Main Street, the working harbor with the Shelter Island ferry, the Mitchell Park carousel + waterfront, Greenport Brewing Co., and a restaurant scene that punches dramatically above the village’s 2,200-person size.
The signature moves:
- Front Street walk at golden hour — from the train station to Mitchell Park
- Shelter Island ferry — 10-minute ride, beautiful, free for pedestrians/cyclists
- Greenport Brewing Co. — flagship taproom, dog-friendly, summer outdoor
- First + South restaurant — village’s reference standard for dinner
- Mitchell Park carousel — restored 1920s carousel, $2 rides, family-perfect
Practical:
- LIRR direct from Penn (Greenport branch) — 2h45 trip, but car-free East End
- Parking on Front Street + Main Street fills 6 PM Friday/Saturday in summer
- North Fork winery loop from Greenport — Pindar, Pellegrini, Bedell all 10-15 min west
Best Long Island day-trip if you want the East End feel without the Hamptons price.
